In keeping with our aim of lending a helping hand whilst
encouraging independence,in summer 2008
Age Concern launched a
new project – “Finding Friendship”.
Finding Friendship is suitable for lonely, isolated older people
who would like to get out and meet people
but are nervous of
taking the first step.
It offers support and encouragement to
help them become involved in social activities
and make friends.
A Friendship Volunteer meets the client in their own home
initially (ideally for no more than 2 or 3 visits).
They help
the client decide on an activity or club they would like to try
and provide support with the initial introduction and first
steps.
Once the client has settled at this new social activity,
the volunteer is able to withdraw and begin supporting a new
client.
It is expected that volunteers will meet with each
client approximately once a week for between 4 and 6 weeks.
Initially the project is available in the Basingstoke town area
only.
Clients will be steered primarily towards Age Concern’s
social activities such as the
Café and
Activity Centres,
although other groups can be considered.
Regrettably Finding
Friendship is not suitable for clients in need of long term
befriending.
For more information or to refer a client, please telephone 01256 423874 or email Tracey at Age Concern.
